About the Event

Sponsoring Organization:  Broadway Christian Church

The Milly Project began in 2017 when a journalist and an archivist in Springfield, MO came across previously unknown documents about an enslaved woman in Springfield named Milly Sawyers. Subsequent newspaper articles inspired a local high school teacher and her students to write a one act play telling the story of how Milly won her freedom in a Missouri court, prior to the Dred Scott decision.

The Milly Ensemble is honored to collaborate with Broadway Christian Church to bring this story & cause to a home that welcomes all.

A true account of an enslaved woman in Springfield becoming a freed woman. A story about our national, state, and local history. A heroine, Milly Sawyers. The Milly Project ensemble would like to express gratitude to our friends for lifting the voice of Milly Sawyers. Our hope is to move forward and work for peace, continue to mourn the injustices of our past while acknowledging that our nation must confess to the egregious institution of slavery, celebrate courageous actions and humanitarians, and to be a part of public justice, creating a stronger and more loving world. We are here to love our neighbors without exceptions.
